Justice.
Justice is a system that helps one person and punishes the other. But sometimes it doesn't even help a person, it may relieve them of stress, such as if a victim was terrorized by a person and that person has been punished, but has the judge relieved them of the pain that was given during that terrorizing moment? That person didn't heal. That person got relieved. I'm going to be answering question number 2 which states "According to the Keeper, what is the point of the Circle, and why does regular justice often fail?" and I'm going to be saying my opinion and my answer for this question. The Keeper is somebody who believes that people can not only heal physically but mentally, and this is what she portrays through the Circle, she shows that by talking and resolving problems not only can people get justice but they can be relieved of these moments that they have experienced which has effected them mentally as well as physically which was the case with Peter and Cole. The Keeper believes in resolving these problems with respect and responsibility and she shows this belief through the feather. She not only shows Peter and Cole's families but shows the concerned citizens of Minneapolis the seriousness along with non political side of the Circle. My point is that The Keeper believes the Circle an show healing, resolving problems with peace, respect and responsibility towards not only the victim (Peter) but to the perpetrator (Cole) as well. Along with helping those problems, she uses the Circle as an opportunity to inform the citizens of Minneapolis of how conflicts ad problems, even hurting someone can be resolved with a conversation. The Keeper, in my opinion, is the "keeper" of tranquility, as she tries to resolve Cole and Peter's dispute and show people justice can be served by helping both end of a complication. Part 2: Why Does Justice Often Fail? Justice often fails because of the system of punishing one person and leaving the other in almost the same state as they were in before the trial. How? Because they may feel relieved but they haven't "moved on" from the incident that had happened, as the Circle Justice says, they want to help the person heal from the event that happened and they help that person by making the person who had hurt them, help them move on, but Justice, helps one person and punishes the other with jail time, fines, etc. The Justice System can fail because it doesn't acknowledge feeling, and feelings play a big factor in the concept of Justice, unlike in the concept of The Justice System. This System may work one way or another but with cases like Cole's it doesn't depend on facts, proof etc. it factors in feeling and healing and those are not factors in The Justice System, and that's why I think the Justice System often fails because of its forgetfulness in all of the factors that should play a role, which often don't. ~Sukhleen Matharu

This is to Jayson as well as Seffi, I think the difference between healing and relieving is the fact that relieving is temporary, if you relieve someone of a problem, say somebody broke a chair and then got a new one for them, they still like their old chair they still want their old chair. But if they heal someone, they fix the chair or get them the same chair and help them understand why they did that. That is what I think the difference is, healing is a permanent thing while relieving is only temporary.

Like always I always admire and appreciate your writing and thoughts. You state them very well with support. However I wish your blog post was a bit shorter. I also have the same question as Jayson. "What is the difference between healing and relieving?"

I used to think Circle Justice was a benefit to young offenders, however, your post changed how I looked at it, and for that I applaud you. Wouldn't the Justice Circle, do Justice for young offenders like Cole, especially because they are young, and a real court meeting could somewhat be overwhelming for them?
